Electricity has been restored in parts of Nellmapius Extension 4 after an overload at the Nellmapius substation caused a temporary power outage affecting multiple streets in the area.

According to a City of Tshwane Utilities and Services report, the outage impacted residents in Karabo, Raadpleeg, Boloka and Thereso streets.

Municipal officials confirmed that a panel at the Nellmapius substation tripped due to excessive strain on the electricity network. The overload is reportedly linked to bridged electricity meters supplying backyard dwellers, placing additional pressure on the infrastructure and causing a power outage.

City service teams were dispatched to investigate and resolve the fault, their response was temporarily delayed after burning tyres were reported near the substation, raising safety concerns.

Technicians later restored power via a backfeed system, bringing relief to affected residents.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns around illegal electricity connections and meter bridging in parts of Nellmapius, Mamelodi and surrounding communities. Illegal connections continue to place significant strain on municipal infrastructure, often leading to equipment failure, repeated power outages and costly repairs.

Mamelodi Times contacted the City of Tshwane for comment regarding measures to address electricity meter bridging and illegal connections, no response had been received at the time of publication.

Attempts were also made to reach Dan Mokgomogane, the designated municipal contact for new electricity supply connections in Regions 5, 6 and 7, but no response had been received by the time of going to press.
