Man Dies After Electrocution During Alleged Cable Theft Attempt in Mamelodi West

A man died on the scene after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal copper cables from a transformer in Mamelodi West on 30 April 2026.

According to residents, the man targeted a newly installed transformer and its copper wiring. While trying to cut the cables, he reportedly encountered live high-voltage components, resulting in a fatal electric shock

Authorities were called to the scene, where the man was declared dead. His identity has not yet been confirmed. The incident adds to a growing number of similar cases in Mamelodi, where individuals have been injured or killed while tampering with electricity infrastructure. The City of Tshwane has warned that tampering with electricity infrastructure is extremely dangerous and often fatal, urging residents to avoid illegal connections and report any suspicious activity.

Officials further stressed that cable theft not only endangers lives but also disrupts electricity supply, affecting entire communities. Residents have been urged to stay away from exposed wires and report damaged infrastructure to prevent further tragedies.
