A devastating fire swept through the Plastic View informal settlement in Tshwane, destroying about 150 shacks, leaving one man dead and several residents injured.
The fire broke out yesterday, 24 April, spreading rapidly through the densely populated informal settlement near Woolands Mall, forcing residents to flee their homes as flames engulfed rows of structures. Emergency teams from Tshwane, including firefighters from Mamelodi Fire Stations, police, TMPD officers, and private security personnel, responded to the scene and brought the blaze under control.
The incident has again raised concerns over safety and living conditions in informal settlements, where overcrowding and flammable building materials often contribute to fast-moving fires
In the aftermath of the blaze, Tshwane officials confirmed that plans to relocate residents from Plastic View are still ongoing. A site in Pretorius Park has reportedly been identified for relocation, although the process has faced delays.
The city of Tshwane Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya said the relocation efforts have been complicated by the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in the settlement. She added that the city is working with the Department of Home Affairs and the South African Police Service to finalise the process.
Community organisations and aid groups, including the Tshwane Foodbank, have since stepped in to assist displaced residents with food and other essentials while recovery efforts
