The Gauteng Liquor Board has intensified unannounced inspections of liquor outlets in Mamelodi as part of a province-wide drive to enforce the Gauteng Liquor Act and promote responsible trading.
The surprise checks are aimed at ensuring that licensed establishments operate in accordance with the conditions of their licences, adhere to responsible trading practices, and contribute to safer communities across Gauteng.
Officials said the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to monitor compliance, curb illegal trading hours, and address issues linked to alcohol-related crime in high-density areas.
The inspections come amid growing concern from residents about the impact of non-compliant taverns and bottle stores on public safety and quality of life.
A Mamelodi resident, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal, welcomed the move.
“We’ve been dealing with noise until late, and people drinking on the streets. If they check these places properly and close down those breaking the rules, maybe our streets will be safer for kids again,” the community member said.
The Gauteng Liquor Board reiterated that all licensed outlets are expected to comply with the law or face enforcement action, including fines, suspension, or licence revocation.
Further inspections are expected to continue across other townships in the province in the coming weeks.
