Several areas in Mamelodi have been without electricity since the weekend after the City of Tshwane shut down the Mamelodi 2 Sub Station to install a new transformer.
The City said the shutdown was necessary to install transformer mono blocks that regulate and supply electricity to communities in eastern Pretoria. What was initially planned as a short interruption has extended into days as technical teams continue with installation, commissioning and safety testing on site.
MMC for Utility Services, Mr Frans Boshielo said the work forms part of a critical infrastructure upgrade at the substation.
“The new Mamelodi Sub 2 transformer is being installed to address recurring faults and overloads that have affected this substation for years,” Frans Boshielo said. “While we planned for a brief interruption, commissioning, testing and compliance checks have taken longer than anticipated. We understand residents have been without supply since the weekend, and we ask for patience while the team finalises the work. Once complete, this upgrade should improve stability and reduce future outages for Mamelodi.”
The City has not provided a specific date for full restoration, but confirmed that work is ongoing at the substation.
Mamelodi 2 Sub Station supplies power to multiple residential areas in eastern Pretoria. Residents have been urged to treat all electrical installations as live and to report emergencies or faults to the Tshwane emergency line.
