MMC for Community and Social Development Service at City of Tshwane Thabisile Vilakazi together with Miss SA Teen Finalist, Ms Oratile Sima, visited and distributed Sanitary Pads to girls in Ribane Laka Secondary School and Agnes Chiba Primary School in Mamelodi on 11 May 2021.
“We are pleased to have been able to assist 250 learners,” she said.
Ms Vilakazi said female learners face great challenges in terms of personal hygiene. For girls who are menstruating, these problems compound the difficulties posed by the inability to afford sanitary towels as well as cultural and gender taboos around menstruation.
“As a result many girls miss on average four days of every school month which is over a month in a year, meaning they fall behind in schoolwork and sometimes even drop out of school altogether,” she said.
Ms Vilakazi said the Department of Community and Social Development Service seeks to maximize the impact of the initiative we are undertaking with both public and private sectors.
“Currently the department is collaborating with one of the Miss SA Teen Finalists on the sanitary collection drive project for girls from underprivileged schools and homes. We believe in joint initiatives that enhance our services for the benefit of the community” she said.
