A 37-year-old man wanted for armed business robberies and cash-in-transit heists has been arrested during a police intelligence operation in Mamelodi East.

The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, September 3 at a house on Sealetsa Street in Vista View after the property was placed under surveillance.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the man was wanted in connection with two cases registered at Pretoria Central SAPS. He had outstanding warrants for business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to Captain Van Dyk, once officers confirmed the suspect was on the premises, they entered and conducted a search.

During the search, police recovered a hunting rifle with its serial number filed off, along with 49 live rounds and a magazine. They also found a 9mm pistol loaded with 22 rounds and two magazines.

A white Toyota Hilux was also discovered in the yard of the property. Preliminary investigations have linked the vehicle to one that was reported stolen in Jabulani, Soweto.

The suspect is being detained at Mamelodi East police station. Mr Van Dyk said the man will now face additional charges, including illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

He described the arrest as a result of dedicated intelligence work and ongoing efforts to combat serious and violent crime in Gauteng.

Police said investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspect and the seized firearms can be linked to other criminal activities in the province.
