The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) is on high alert to monitor any development of brazen lawlessness and looting across all regions of the City. TMPD members have been deployed and are ensuring high visibility, particularly in volatile areas such as the Pretoria CBD and Mamelodi on 12 July 2021.

MMC for Community Safety, Karen Meyer said the City welcomes the announcement by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) that its members will be deployed to the Gauteng province to assist law enforcement agencies.

“Our TMPD teams are currently working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to bolster efforts to combat and contain the lawlessness that flared up in recent days,” she said.

Ms. Meyer said areas of concern in the City currently include major highways in and around Mamelodi, Hammanskraal, and several parts of the CBD. Major routes into the City from Mabopane, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa are also affected.

“We strongly advise against residents and business owners from taking the law into their own hands by engaging in armed confrontation with these criminals,” she said.

Ms Meyer said, “It is the job of law enforcement agencies to restore and maintain law and order. We also request that private security companies work together with law enforcement in the City to ensure that the lives and property of our residents are protected,”
