
The city of Tshwane community and social development services department donate five wheelchairs and six walking sticks to support elderly residents and other vulnerable groups in the Mamelodi community.
Ms Peggy De Bruin, MMC for Social Development and Community Services said the first donation of one wheelchair went to the family of a 13-year-old young person with disabilities in Mamelodi West.
“The donation comes after I was made aware of the difficulties facing this family and I made sure that I visit the family to show my support.

“I also ensured that the family is provided with additional support services such as registering the household on the city’s indigent register.” She said.
Mr Azwihangwisi Mphindi from The Department of Indigent Programme said the Indigent Programme is offered through the Department of Social Development and Community Services which is governed by Ms De Bruin.
“The Indigent Programme is aimed at assisting residents who are unable to pay for municipal services, it also serves as a vehicle to fight poverty.
The city also donated four wheelchairs and six walking chairs to needy elderly residents at Lodewyk Old Age Home in Eersterust.
“Our department and Social Development and Community Services will continue to work towards landing a helping hand where we can in the spirit of the upcoming Mandela day on the 18 July 2022. We will call on businesses, private individuals and non-governmental organizations to come forward and work with the city to uplift and support our vulnerable residents,” he said.
Ms Thembi Prudence Mkholwa, an old age worker said “the support of the City is valued.
“As a result of their assistance, our patients at the Lodewyk P Spies Old Age Home where we were handed over wheelchairs and walking sticks are extremely happy. I hope the city will continue to offer support whenever possible and improve Tshwane as a whole,” she said.
