Tensions flared in Nellmapius Extension 21 after municipal officials moved through the area, pointing out roadside shacks and issuing an order to break them down
Several houses built along the road have already been demolished by the municipality. Officials told residents that the structures are illegal and sit directly in the proclaimed road reserve, blocking infrastructure upgrades meant to improve access in the fast-growing settlement near Mamelodi.
The operation targeted shacks lining key routes in the area, which some residents refer to as Marikana. The move has left residents frustrated and uncertain about what comes next. With no clear relocation plan announced, families are worried about where they will go once their homes are gone.
“We are tired of being told to move with no place to go, we want development and proper roads. But these shacks are our homes. The municipality must talk to us first and give us another place to stay before they break everything down. We have children here. Where must we sleep tonight?” Said a community member, Makgaribe Thete.
The majority of the residents were against the action taken by the city, while Other residents said they support the need for better roads but want the municipality to handle the process fairly, with proper notice and assistance for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children.
The municipality has not yet confirmed what support, if any, will be provided to displaced families. The people are currently suffering the immediate loss of their homes.
For now, residents are watching closely to see whether development in Nellmapius will come with a plan for the people it affects most.
