The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), in partnership with the Tiyani Mabunda Foundation, hosted the finals of the Sports Against Crime tournament at the Central Grounds in Mamelodi as part of Youth Day commemorations on 16 June.
The event formed part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing social crime by engaging young people in structured and positive activities through sport.
Organisers said the programme focuses on removing children from environments that may expose them to crime and social challenges by creating safe spaces where they can participate in organised sporting activities and build meaningful connections.
Beyond competition, the tournament also provided participants with opportunities to interact with positive role models and mentors who encouraged responsible decision-making and personal development.
The initiative highlighted the role that sport can play in strengthening communities and creating alternatives for young people who may be vulnerable to negative influences.
Community members welcomed the programme, saying activities that invest in young people contribute to building a safer and more hopeful future for Mamelodi.
The organisers expressed hope that the tournament’s success would inspire continued collaboration among stakeholders to support youth development across Tshwane.
