The City of Tshwane Community and Social Development Services Department recently hosted a successful Tshwane Spelling Bee and held a prize ceremony for the winners on 31st May 2022.
MMC for Social Development and Community Services, Cllr Peggy de Bruin said the Tshwane Spelling Bee aims to promote the usage of all languages, particularly indigenous languages. The City’s strategy is to host spelling bee competitions in the language that is mostly spoken in the hosting communities.
“The Tshwane Spelling Bee concept is derived from the national Department of Education’s program and our department has embraced this program as part of its activities in the approved Service Delivery and Budget Implementation Plan program,” she said.
Ms De Bruin said the campaign targets at least 210 participants at the regional level and 50 at the City finals level. This includes learners from Grade 4 to 7, which is the intermediate phase.
The competition has three levels: school competitions, regional rounds, and city finals.
Winners of the Tshwane Spelling Bee received the following prizes:
• Regional rounds: Regional certificate and book vouchers (first prize: R1 000 voucher, second prize: R750 voucher, third prize: R500 voucher)
• City finals round: First prize (R3 000 uniform voucher, “Reading is Fun” medal, certificate, and floating trophy), second prize (R2 000 uniform voucher, medal, and certificate), and third prize (R1 000 uniform voucher, medal and certificate.
“The City of Tshwane is committed to supporting the development of our learners through education. I would like to congratulate all the winners of the 2022 Tshwane Spelling Bee and I want to see many learners participate in this competition in the future,” she said.
