The City of Tshwane, Community, and Social Development Services Department has embarked on a blanket outreach initiative targeting various shelters in Tshwane for the homeless and the elderly, as well as orphanages including Tateni Orphanage in Mamelodi.

This drive has so far also reached beneficiaries from Lyttelton Community Centre and Akasia Hall, which have received donations of blankets, food parcels, and sanitary packages.

Cllr Peggy de Bruin said the winter has brought about a tough time for vulnerable persons who are unable to afford their next meal and make ends meet to keep warm and safe.

“I would like to encourage households that are unable to afford basic services to apply for the City’s Indigent Programme at any of the City’s regional offices. The program also serves as a vehicle to fight poverty,” she said.

Mrs. de Bruin said part of the ongoing efforts is to bring stakeholders together to lend a helping hand to assist vulnerable communities.

“The City would like to encourage the private sector to work with us during this winter to assist the poor and vulnerable to stave off the cold weather,” she said
